Although the M1A Socom 16 is smaller, but it weighs about the same to the M1A Scout. However, the short, stout M1A Socom 16 has a lot more attitude, dare we say sexier. It is a powerful and compact shooting device. In trade, I got a lightly used Springfield Armory M1A Socom 16 along with $200 cash. So basically, I got the Socom for the equivalent of ~$850. I then put the $200 towards 11 CMI 20 round magazines from Brownells. They're currently on sale for $19.99 each, and I used a coupon for $20 off $200 and free shipping.

This rifle features matte black finished metal, a 16 inch barrel with muzzle break, black syn. stock, Vltor rail system, Tritium insert frt. sight, and adj. rear sight. The Scout, and SOCOM versions of the M1A fulfill this, and are still accurate enough at distance. If you have to carry that rifle in the woods, having 6" less of barrel end to carch on wait-a-minute vines makes a big difference, with little effect on real accuracy, especially at typical combat engagement distances. Apr 03, 2010 · My own results today from taking my M1A SOCOM II to the range with my own handloads. All loads were done with H-4895 starting low and working my way up. Strings were 5 rounds loaded in the magazine of the same powder charge. Rounds were loaded to 2.745 COL, bullets were Speer 150gr. BTSP in Federal cases with CCI standard rifle primers. The firing line M1A forum will probably point you in the direction of "the very best"; however, I didn't buy the socom because it was the best I bought it for two reasons: Ease of use: The short barrel length makes the rifle easier to manipulate. Lighter than the full size M1a, uses 100% GI parts (except the shorter barrel), and is still "swingable". The SOCOM is a handy little rifle but I want complete parts interchangeability. I have a full size and the Scout, and only with both would I think "I need a SOCOM" if I was in the market for another M1a. JMHO, YMMV and all that. :) Well said.
